Alleviate Arthritis Pain

Alleviate Arthritis Pain

Arthritis is a degenerative condition indicated by inflammation of the joints causing pain and stiffness, which can be very restricting and hinder us from being efficient and productive individuals. Arthritis is usually treated with anti-inflammatory and pain medication. The pain caused by arthritis can vary, but most of the time, it can prevent us from performing our work at home or in the office properly.

Living with chronic pain can be frustrating and difficult. Arthritis pain isn’t always curable, but there are ways to curb and alleviate the pain. Here are some ways to help you get instant pain relief if you are suffering from arthritis:

  • Topical medication – gels, creams or patches are applied to the skin to alleviate pain from arthritis. These topical medications are applied to the affected area to help numb the nerve-endings close to the skin, thus minimizing pain.
  • Meditation – relaxing can help ease your mind and body. Meditation and other relaxation techniques can help alleviate pain by reducing stress, which in turn helps decrease inflammation and pain. When you start feeling pain, close your eyes; take deep and steady breaths while counting to 10 for each breath. Being at peace is enough to make you forget the pain.
  • Steroid injection – having steroids injected directly at the pain site can calm inflammation, thus alleviating pain. This type of pain relief may last for days or months, although steroid shots should only be done for a maximum of three times a year since constant steroid shots may make ligaments and tendons weak and fragile.
  • Exercise – exercise boosts energy and improves your mood. With constant exercise, you are stretching and strengthening your body. Range of motion and strengthening exercises help reduce pain.
  • Weight loss – losing weight lessens the stress directed at your joint. Extra weight adds pressure to your knees, hips, and feet. Losing weight will not only improve your appearance but will also improve your mobility.
  • Hot treatment – a warm bath or shower, heating pads or patches, hot wax or warm compresses can help ease joint stiffness. Heat or warmth promotes blood flow and relaxes muscles and keeps joints loose.
  • Cold treatment – cold treatments such as ice or gel packs help relieve swelling, inflammation and joint pain by constricting blood vessels. The cold suspends pain sensations in the body.
  • Acupuncture – acupuncture supposedly restores balance in the body and re-routes energies. It is known to minimize arthritis pain. The correct placement of needles increases endorphin production which acts as natural pain relievers.
  • Turmeric – turmeric contains a chemical called curcumin known to contain anti-inflammatory properties, thus helps in reducing arthritis pain.
  • Massage – having the affected area gently massaged can reduce pain and stiffness. Be sure that the massage therapist is experienced with arthritis. You can also ask your physician or therapist if there are self-massage options for your arthritis pain.
  • Trigger point injection – this injection can relieve pain for weeks or months since anesthesia is injected directly into the pained area. Trigger point injections are directed at the cluster of painful muscles and allows the muscle tissue to return to its normal structure after injection.
  • Rest – you can rest to help ease your mind, relax your joints and alleviate fatigue. Rest leads to positivity, which in turn can alleviate any slight pain caused by arthritis.
